Dark-Eyed Junco
This species has been called the Slate-Colored Junco, Oregon Junco, Pink-Sided Junco, White-Winged Junco, and the Gray-Headed Junco, names that refer to the variable plumage coloration. In this area, the Oregon Junco is common at The Ranch during the winter. It has a slaty to blackish hood, rufous-brown to buffy-brown back and sides. The females have a duller hood. The Pink-Sided Junco is known to occur in the Central Rockies and the Gray-Headed Junco is resident in the southern Rockies including New Mexico. Intergrades between some of the Junco races are frequent.
These are those darn birds that go around kicking gravel up on your porches and walkways! They can really move the gravel. Towhees and Sparrows also are heavy duty earth movers.
