THE GOLDFINCHES
John & Judy McCain claim that the Goldfinch they observed frequently during the winter 2000/2001 was the American Goldfinch (Carduelis tristis) whereas Mickey Burch believes that the Goldfinch in this area is the Lesser Goldfinch (Carduelis psaltria). Both of these observations are probably correct. According to the Third Edition of National Geographic's Field Guide to the Birds of North America (1999) the American Goldfinch occurs throughout New Mexico in the winter but leaves New Mexico in the summer. (The McCain's have observed the American Goldfinch in all its golden glory near El Vado Lake in northern New Mexico during early May.) This book states that Goldfinches and the Pine Siskin are commonly seen feeding together during the winter months. The American Goldfinch and the Pine Siskin are approximately the same size (about 5"). The Lesser Goldfinch is somewhat smaller (4.5") and is here in southeastern New Mexico year-round.
