Rodeo
Ramble
SKP TRA-Park, Pecos, Texas
October 21-24, 2003
The Chili
Chapter Rally was held at the SKP TRA-Park in Pecos, Texas on October 21 thru
24, 2003. The WagonMasters were Roxy and Tom Colomb (#52015) and Rosalee
and Dick Gillett (#37454).
Events began on
Tuesday evening with a Finger Food Get-To-Gather in the Club House. Roxy
welcomed everyone, talked about the history of Pecos and why the theme of Rodeo
Ramble had been selected. Mainly, the City of Pecos is where the first
ever Rodeo was held and the rally was going to do some ramblin' while learning
about the area. A game of introductions was led by Rosalee and brought out
some real fun responses from those participating. The evening was
concluded with a song.
Wednesday
morning a coffee and doughnut breakfast got everyone up and running and was
followed by a trip to the local zoo. We walked off the breakfast calories
and managed to get there in time to see a couple of animals enjoying the mating
ritual.
Lunch was on our
own and after lunch we caravaned to the West of the Pecos Museum where we had a
nice tour, spending several hours.
Dinner on
Wednesday consisted of Cowboy Stew with hunks of French bread and ice
cream for dessert. This was followed with a reading by Martha McIlvain, a
game of unroping which became hilarious, and closed again with a song.
Thursday once
again started with coffee and doughnuts and then a caravan to a not-to-distant
State Park where everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch, some climbed sand dunes and
other went sand sledding. A good time was had by all. Thursday
afternoon took the group (though not as a caravan) to the Million Barrel Museum
where we heard the story of the large oil vat, visited the historic hotel, and
wandered through two old railroad cars. We were also invited to return and
camp there for a rally at any time. Thursday evening was a dine-out in a
private room at the Alpine Inn with waitresses that kept our glasses and cups
full of whatever we were drinking. The menu consisted of Barbequed Beef,
Spanish Rice, Southern Fried Chicken, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, Salad, Corn,
Green Beans, and Hot Rolls with Peach Cobbler for dessert. All of this for
only $10 per person, tax and tip included.
Friday morning
hitch-up breakfast was Sausage Gravy on Biscuits and for a
while we wondered if it was going to happen. The bakery that promised the
Biscuits did not open in time and the gravy did not thicken. Thanks to
about six different chefs sticking their noses (or was it hands) in, we got the
gravy thickened with instant Mashed Potatoes, bought frozen Biscuits and the
baked them quickly and were only about 10 minutes late getting started.
A great time was
enjoyed by all and, as was the intent of all the planners, the entire planned
four days cost about $70 per couple.
